This is my first draft idea for the layout of the Hard Cash DVD cover
Analysis:
I chose to have the our four main characters on the front cover, with one women in a red dress and the other with a deep V cut, as this will make it less obvious which of the two will be the Femme Fatal. I like the idea of keeping the audience in suspense until they actually watch the movie. I chose the colour green for the word 'Cash' as I thought this links to Envy and Greed and also it is the colour of Dollars in America! Lastly, I have the detective on the left wearing sunglasses and a tie, suggesting he is mysterious and I have James in front looking to the side, making him look shifty and as if he is hiding something, which links to the cheating plot line! I think this would make a very effective front cover for a DVD cover, however, for our coursework, we actually have to make a POSTER and so here is some research I have done on poster designs in the movie industry!
Here's a video of Rosie and myselft analysing some posters:
As you can see from the three examples above, movie posters have some similarities and conventions. For example, the biggest text is always the Title of the movie, its font is also always relevant to the actual title/movie, for example, the Last Song is a delicate font because it is a romantic movie. Alternatively, Your Highness is in capitals, it has some bolder bits and is quiet medieval; this links to the genre of the movie, as it is a fantasy-comedy-romance movie. The posters also have extra information at the bottom of the poster, for example, the release date and who is acting in it/directing it etc.
The images on the posters are all powerful, and again they link to the actual plot in the movie. Lastly, they are most commonly of the main characters in the movie and can often suggest further to the audience what the movie is about. Around the image, there are often quotes enticing people to watch the movie and/or famous people who are acting in the movie are also displayed around the top of the poster, typically.
